Nick's background in science, biology, teaching, outdoor recreation, scouting and working with children make him an excellent addition to the teaching staff at Cherokee Creek Boys School. Born and raised in Athens, Ohio, he attended Ohio University in his home town where he received a B.S. in Environmental Biology and a B.S Ed. Degree in Secondary Science. After graduation, he taught Junior High School Science and High School Biology at New Boston High School in New Boston, Ohio. Nick then combined his teaching skills with his love for the outdoors, as an instructor at The Nantahala Outdoor Center, working with their rafting and canoeing programs in South Carolina. "I discovered that this "non-traditional" classroom was perfect for me. I loved being outside and teaching folks with minimal experience, that by working together we could have a memorable day."
For the next ten years, Nick served as a guide on the rivers in the South East, worked as a substitute teacher and designed and taught a water conservation course in the schools in Rabun County, GA, Oconee County, SC and the Chattooga River Outfitters. He also worked at a residential/wilderness camp for adjudicated teenage girls in South Carolina.
Nick joined Cub Scouts when he was eight years old and stayed in Scouting throughout his school years. He later served as an assistant Scoutmaster.
Nick first joined the CCBS staff as a second shift counselor for a year and a half before becoming a teacher in 2005. When asked about his job at Cherokee Creek, Nick says, "I came to Cherokee Creek because I wanted to be in a setting where I could use my diverse talents and experience to do profoundly important work and I am glad I did! I really enjoy the variety of activities and am inspired by the challenges that the students face. I believe in the philosophical tenets of the program and especially appreciate both the professionalism AND the fun loving attitude of the staff."
Nick enjoys hiking, boating, fishing, mountain biking, reading, gardening, studying nature and spending time with his two dogs! But he is most captivated by his wife, Karen who he met on the Chattooga River - further contributing to his love of the outdoors!
