Christy came to Cherokee Creek from her own private practice, in
Walhalla, South Carolina, where she conducted counseling services for adolescents and adults. As a part of her practice, she worked with Worthouse Inc., to provide counseling services to abused women, their children and individuals who are at risk of abusing/ neglecting their children. She has an M.S. in Educational Psychology, and a B.S. in Business Administration, both from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She has also completed post-graduate work in Psycho-pathology, Systemic Gestalt Psychology, Brief Therapy, CPR, Wilderness First Aid, Expressive arts, and she studied as at the University of Swansea in Wales as an Exchange Student.
Prior to starting her own practice, she was an Administrator with
Aspen Youth Alternatives, (Camp Winding Stairs for adolescent girls,) in Tamassee, South Carolina. At Aspen she was responsible for start-up and the overall operation of the facility. The Camp, which was accredited by the state, contracted with the Department of Juvenile Justice to provide moderate management group home for juvenile adolescent offenders. Her experience also includes serving as: Counselor, with the Woodlands Foundation, at the Woodridge Psychiatric Hospital, in Clayton, Georgia - where she provided crisis counseling, Psychiatric care, group and individual counseling for dual-diagnosis patients. She also assisted the facility in obtaining national accreditation; Director, for the Foothills Clubhouse Day Program, Department of Mental Health, Oconee County, South Carolina - where she directed the Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Clubhouse for the chronically mentally ill where she provided career counseling, Alcohol and Drug Education, and Emergency on call Crisis Intervention for the County; and she served as a Counselor, for Peninsula Hospital / Village, Knoxville, Tennessee - a long-term wilderness treatment center for emotionally disturbed adolescents - which involved Recreational therapy, AA and NA Step studies and Treatment Planning.
Christy enjoys working at Cherokee Creek because, " The staff are refreshing colleagues with a grasp on 'change agents' for kids, which I believe are Love, Structure and Fun."
When not in her therapist role - Christy enjoys, kayaking, rafting, hiking, gardening, and working with stained glass. She lives in the mountains near Westminster, with her husband and two children and says some day she plans to learn how to play the fiddle!
